Famed International Theatre Festival opens in Sibiu

The 29th edition of the International Theatre Festival in Sibiu, with a theme of „Beauty”, will take place from Friday 23rd to July 3rd, bringing together productions of theatre, dance, circus, film, musical, opera, reads a press release of the Romanian Cultural Institute.

The program will also include street theatre performances and other performances, concerts, book launches or exhibitions.

The event brings together great artists of the world stage, offering the public the opportunity to enjoy some of the most appreciated shows of the world, recognized internationally and rewarded with prestigious distinctions.

„The contribution of the Romanian Cultural Institute is directed this year to spaces which Romania has a special friendship with, such as France and the Republic of Moldova, but also to support the presence at FITS of the Ukrainian director Andriy Zholdak, who proposes a Cultural Dialogue in time of war, in the particularly difficult geopolitical context of the present, which deeply affects the artistic field and threatens the cultural heritage”, said the president of the Romanian Cultural Institute, Liviu Jicman, quoted in the press release.

This edition will take place both in physical and hybrid format, so that some of the performances within the Festival, which will take place in performance halls, in unconventional spaces, in churches and in the central markets of Sibiu, can be followed on the official FITS website, on the digital streaming platform of FITS, www.scena-digitala.ro, as well as on the Festival’s Facebook page and YouTube channel.

Also, other outstanding performances of the international contemporary scene that will not be able to reach Sibiu, but which will be played at specially scheduled times for FITS, in the spaces where they were made, in countries such as France, Germany, Ukraine, Moldova, Canada, Japan, South Korea, USA, Australia, etc. will be transmitted online.

FITS upholds a tradition of grand performances in open spaces, to which the public access will be free, and additionally will broadcast, in the online environment, a series of shows with free access.

With the support of the Romanian Cultural Institute, there will be conferences of great international personalities: „George Banu in dialogue with great personalities invited to FITS”, „Bridges between cultures: Romania, France – Europe, Japan” – session of public communications of Silviu Purcărete, „Musical dialogue: Romania – France – (Europe) – Japan” – special lecture of Vasile Sirli, and the series of lectures by Andriy Zholdak (Ukraine – Germany) „Cultural dialogue in time of war: Shakespeare – saving solution”, with the following topics: Shakespeare in 2022, Romeo and Juliet – Eros and Thanatos, Shakespeare for young actors.

At the same time, the RCI will support the presentation of „Hamlet in spicy sauce”, a show directed by Alexandru Cozub, performed by the actors of the Mihai Eminescu National Theatre in Chisinau, Republic of Moldova.

The International Theatre Festival in Sibiu is organized under the High Patronage of the President of Romania and under the High Patronage of the President of the Federal Republic of Germany, with the support of the City Hall of Sibiu, the Local Council of Sibiu, the Government of Romania, the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Education, the Romanian Cultural Institute.
