How many Romanians want to leave NATO? New poll gives decisive answer

A recent survey shoes that only 4% of Romanians would like Romania to leave NATO while 87% are opposed.

Romania joined the defensive military alliance in 2004 and has been considered a stalwart ally with a key strategic geographical position neighboring the Black Sea, Ukraine, Moldova and Serbia, as well as Bulgaria and Hungary which fellow alliance members.

The same survey found the European Union to be slightly less popular than NATO.

Some 78% want to remain in the bloc while 14% would like to leave, the AtlasIntel poll conducted for Hotnews showed.

The same number, 14% would like Romania to move closer to Russia and away from the Western family, while 73% of respondents disagreed.

On non geopolitical issues, 51% of people declared themselves in favor of progressive taxation and accession to the euro zone. Some 44% want Romania to reunite with Moldova, while 29%  oppose it.

Reflecting conservative values, 55% of people are opposed to legalizing civil partnership for same-sex couples, while 26% who agree that those couples should be able to form a legal partnership.

The AtlasIntel survey was conducted between April 10-13, 2025 on a sample of 2,994 respondents, using the random digital recruitment method, has the Romanian electorate as its universe and has a margin of error of ±2 percentage points at a confidence level of 95%.
