The Virtual Museum of Art under Communism has been officially launched by the Brașov Art Museum, in partnership with the Institute for the Investigation of Communism Crimes and the Memory of Romanian Exile (IICCMER), which hosts many initiatives.

The Virtual Museum of Art under Communism is a digital platform dedicated to the recovery, reinterpretation and development of artistic heritage created in Romania between 1948 and 1989.

This chapter of visual history is essential, but insufficiently known.

The project is an attempt to create an accessible and interactive framework for the over 500 works from the Brașov Art Museum collection, along with research materials, thematic analyses and educational resources.

The platform also includes profiles of the artists whose works have been digitized, providing brief biographical context on their careers.

By digitizing and contextualizing this heritage, the virtual museum hopes to foster a nuanced perspective on the complex relationship between art, power and individual experience during the communist period. The virtual museum should function as a dynamic space for knowledge, reflection and cultural participation, offering open access to the general public, pupils, students and researchers, the official press release informs.

What’s more, the platform will continue to grow by integrating new materials, research and curatorial perspectives, consolidating itself as a sustainable tool for exploring Romanian art from the communist period and for understanding the historical and cultural contexts that shaped it.
