It makes sense: Zelensky won’t give up the Donbas, but he will negotiate a security deal

Ukraine has offered to purchase $100bn worth of American weapons financed by Europe, in order to receive security guarantees from the United States.

This would also involve a $50bn American-Ukrainian deal to produce drones with Ukrainian companies.

Both Ukraine and Russia have developed their drone industry significantly since 2022.

There will be a talk on new security deals on Monday at the White House, also involving Ukraine’s European allies.

So far we know from a released and publicized document that Ukraine would buy at minimum 10 US-made Patriot air defence systems.

This comes as Trump has prioritized American export in his second mandate.

“We’re not giving anything. We’re selling weapons”. Trump said about this, after historically having criticized the Biden administration for handing Ukraine copious resources for free.

President Zelensky has held firm that there will be no territorial concessions, which is understandable.

But Trump and Putin left the Alaska meeting with no apparent plans of ceasefire in sight.

Trump has faced public criticism for the meeting, being generally seen as having been played by Putin like a fiddle. Zelensky, perceiving this, noted that Trump is viewed with scorn in the Russian media.

At the Anchorage meeting, Putin suggest that Trump freezes the rest of the frontline if Ukraine withdraws troops from Donetsk and Luhansk in the Donbas region, which Russia has occupied. Zelensky declined firmly, seeing it as a gateway for continued Russian occupation.

Kiev says it expects damage compensation from Russia eventually.

At the same time, Melania Trump published a letter of pathos towards Vladimir Putin addressing Ukraine’s innocent children.

Either the White House, Ukraine and its allies snatch peace from Putin, or there won’t be peace anytime soon
