The 75-year-old monarch is now undergoing treatment, the palace says.

King Charles III was diagnosed with a form of cancer and has begun treatment,  Buckingham Palace said in a statement Monday.

The statement said that the cancer was discovered during a recent hospital procedure for benign prostate treatment and that “subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer.”

Buckingham Palace did not identify the type of cancer that was discovered or at what stage it was found.

His youngest son Prince Harry will be flying to London in the coming days after speaking to his father following his shock cancer diagnosis, British media reported.

The King contacted both the Duke of Sussex and the heir to the throne Prince of Wales personally to tell them of his cancer diagnosis before it was announced by Buckingham Palace.

On Monday, the 75-year-old monarch “commenced a regular schedule of regular treatments” and was “advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties,” the statement said. During the treatment, King Charles will “continue to undertake state business and official paperwork as usual.”

“The king is grateful to his medical team for their swift intervention, which was made possible thanks to his recent hospital procedure. He remains wholly positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible,” the palace said.  “His Majesty has chosen to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer.”

No other details were released by Buckingham Palace.

bout a week ago, King Charles was discharged from a London hospital after undergoing a procedure to treat an enlarged prostate, said Buckingham Palace at the time. It said he was expected to resume public events after a “period of recuperation,” it said.

Before he was discharged, a statement from Buckingham Palace said that “the King has sought treatment for an enlarged prostate,” which is ”common with thousands of men each year.”

The monarch became king in September 2022 when he was 73, following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, his mother.
