Meat, bread and milk prices will rise by up to 15% after energy price hikes, producers warn

Consumers will have to pay up to 15% more for meat, bread and milk after a massive hike in energy prices, Romanian producers say.

Producers say they are obliged to hike prices after a massive 700% increase in their energy bills, Digi24 reported.

Aurel Popescu, of Rompan,  said bread producers were telling them their gas bills were “6 to 8” times higher and electricity was costing them three or four times more, and raw materials for bread was fifty percent higher.

“So far, a loaf of bread is 5-6% more,” he said. Rompan is the Romanian millers’ association.

Meat producers are also hit by the threat of swine fever.

„We have culled 40,000 swine so we have a deficit of 1 million pigs. ”We have budgeted for a 30% rise in feed prices, on top of which we have utility bills,“ said Ioan Ladoși, a meat producer.

Dairy farmer Claudiu Davitoiu said: “Diesel’s gone up, electricity costs more, fertilizer and feed. Milk is 5 bani more expensive and feed costs 1 leu a kilogram more.”

Even packaging costs more.

„One producer said his electricity went up 700%, and packaging by 44%. It’s vost us 23 to 25% more to produce this year,” said Dorin Cojocaru, of the Milk Industry Owners’ Association.

Dairy products are expected to rise by 2.5 to 15%.

Energy price hikes jack up cost of food, gas in Romania. But potatoes are one-third cheaper than last year
