New coronavirus cases rise to 250 in Romania as number of infections remains unpredictable

The number of new coronavirus cases rose to 250 on Tuesday as authorities debate whether to keep a state of alert to stop the virus from spreading.

The Strategic Communication Group said the latest increase came after more than 9,300 tests were conducted in the past 24 hours.

The new figures push the total to 22,415 cases since the outbreak. There have been more than 200 cases for the past several days.

Some 1,437 people have succumbed to the virus, including ten in the last day.

There are currently 173 patients being treated for their symptoms in intensive care, more than Monday.

Of the confirmed cases, 16,071 people have recovered.

There are 1,407 people in institutionalized quarantine, and another 86,122 people isolating at home under medical supervision.

Nationally, some 573,638 tests have been processed.

Romania’s politicians disagree on the best way forward as the number of daily cases remains unpredictable.

Prime Minister Ludovic Orban who heads the Liberal Party  wants to keep the state of alert which is being discussed at a government meeting Tuesday, but opposition parties disagree.

The Social Democrats which have a majority in Parliament with their allies say there is no justification for keeping the state of alert.

Romania has already eased some restrictions. On Monday, malls, private schools and fitness centers were allowed to reopen.

Restaurants and cinemas however remain closed and regular church services aren’t allowed. International trail traffic has not resumed either.
