Romania reported another record number of cases of Covid-19 on Thursday, with many of the 1,130 cases concentrated in the capital and two other counties.

The new record came as authorities tested 21,419 people, one of the highest amounts of tests carried out in a single day.

Some 5.19% of those tested positive for the virus, a higher percentage than Wednesday. Some 40% of tests were carried out on people who asked to be tested.

Twenty-five people died in the past 24 hours. They all had underlying health conditions, the Strategic Communication Group said.

There are about 5,600 Covid-19 patients hospitalized of which  285 are in intensive care units, fewer than Wednesday, the group said.

The total number of cases on Thursday rose to 41,275 since the pandemic began.

Romania has seen a surge in recent weeks after lockdown restrictions were loosened, and the government on Wednesday imposed quarantine on two villages where there were outbreaks of the disease, following a new law that gives them extra powers to quarantine high-risk places and isolate infectious people.

Most new cases were reported in the central county of Brasov which had 113 infections,  a rise of 4.57% in a single day. The southern county of Arges where cases have soared in recent weeks reported 106 new cases.

Some 101 new infections were confirmed in the capital Bucharest, a significant drop from the previous day 152 cases were confirmed.

There are currently 250 Covid-19 patients isolated at home, and 816 patients in institutionalized isolation.

Some 1,334 people have been quarantined where they live.
