A Romanian investor and former communications minister has threatened to sue an influencer linked to Elon Musk over disinformation targeting a Romanian publication and a business group.

The misinformation appears to be part of an ongoing smear campaign against pro-Western entities in Romania who are linked sometimes erroneously to philanthropist George Soros.

Mario Nawfal, the foreign influencer, supports pro-Russia former presidential candidate Calin Georgescu whose unlikely win in the first round of the presidential elections led to it being canceled  over foreign interference.  Nawfal  wants the elections to be reinstated which the Constitutional Court president Marius Enache said this  week was “out of the question.”

Nawfal is a major social media influencer, and supporter of Elon Musk, who heads Donald Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency. Musk has also waded into Romanian politics and supports hard-right, pro-Russian parties.

Investor and former communications minister Marius Bostan on Saturday slammed allegations that Repatiot was financed by USAID.

“The Romanian business leaders’ project is financed by several business people” he said on X. He also pushed back unfounded claims that Repatriot was a shareholder in Newsweek.

“I am a shareholder of Newsweek and Newsweek Romania is a prestigious publication that has hosted the opinions of many Republicans and revealed Russian subversion in Europe”

“You are a liar and I will sue if you don’t immediately the lies from your post,” Bostan said on X.

Thousands of Georgescu’s supporters held a rally on Saturday in Bucharest to protest the annulment of the presidential elections and to gather signatures for Georgescu to run again in rescheduled May elections.
