Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway and Sweden have announced today that they will fund a joint $500 million package of military equipment and munitions for Ukraine.
These will be sourced from the United States, which has hemmed and hawed on its continued support.
The joint package is developed under NATO’s Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) initiative.
PURL (Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List) is an initiative launched by the United States and NATO to supply Ukraine with critically needed weapons by funding the delivery of U.S.-manufactured arms and equipment through NATO member states. The mechanism allows partner countries to finance the procurement of such weapons according to a prioritized list of requirements defined by Ukraine and agreed with the United States and NATO. PURL also enables NATO member states to coordinate contributions to make funding more targeted and timely. Rather than conducting separate procurements, each country contributes financially to a common package that the United States uses to supply weapons and critical equipment, particularly those that cannot be substituted by European alternatives. This enables a substantial reduction in the time from defining requirements to delivering ready-to-use weaponry to the front lines, reports the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine.
“Our Nordic and Baltic Allies are stepping up to fund a further package of critical military equipment for Ukraine. This equipment is extremely important as Ukraine enters the winter months, and deliveries through PURL are flowing into Ukraine. NATO Allies will continue to deliver essential equipment and supplies”, explained NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
