U.S. President Donald Trump conveyed a special message to Romania on the occasion of its National Day, praising the “strong and growing” partnership between Romania and the United States. The message was sent in a formal letter addressed to Romanian President Nicușor Dan as Romania marked 107 years since the 1918 Great Union of Romania’s regions.
In his message, President Trump extended his best wishes to the Romanian people and highlighted the solid foundation of the U.S.–Romania relationship.
A letter written by Trump to Dan has been circulating the internet:
“Dear Mr. President,
It is my honor to extend the best wishes of the American people as you celebrate 107 years since your National Day on December 1.
The United States and Romania share a strong and continually developing partnership, built on strategic interests focused on security, energy cooperation, and trade. I appreciate Romania’s leadership as a NATO ally and a pillar of regional security, and I encourage its steady role in promoting stability in the Black Sea region.
Building on this foundation, we look forward to expanding opportunities for trade, investment, and innovation to strengthen both our economies. The active diplomacy between our citizens remains the cornerstone of this dynamic alliance.
As my administration works to make America safer, stronger, and more prosperous, I aim to deepen our close relationship and the history we share.”
Despite the friendly letter, Romania been removed from Visa Waiver Program (VWP) by U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The country was originally accepted in the VMP in January 2025, but the plan was revised in March 2025 and rescinded in May 2025, despite Romania have met all of the obligatory conditions.
This created an awkward situation for both sides, but particularly for Romania, which celebrated publicly.
Regardless, Romania’s Foreign Minister, Oana Țoiu, has stated that President Nicușor Dan is expected to visit the United States in the first half of 2026.
