Orban goes revisionist in Romania yet again

On Friday, Hungarian President Viktor Orbán and his VP Zsolt Semjén participated in an official lunch with local Hungarian officials in Tusnad, central Romania.

In this meeting, they discussed “current strategic national problems”, reports MTI.

Thereupon, on Saturday, at the Free Summer University from Bálványos, although Orbán expressed words of diplomatic friendship for Romania’s active new PM, Marcel Ciolacu,

This year’s theme was “The Time of Peace”. However, during his speech, Orbán declared that he received a document from the Romanian Ministry of External Affairs telling him which subjects he was not to broach – namely, Hungarian encroachment upon “inexistent administrative territorial units”, and his previous revisionist and xenophobic stance on migration.

“I believe they’re thinking of Transylvania and the Szeklerland, however we did not declare these are Romanian territorial units”.

He responded that Hungary has always supported Romania’s Schengen ascension, which was recently denied.

Romanian politicians pushed back with a series of statements: PSD EP member Victor Negrescu called the incident “illustrative of the failure of illiberal politics”.

In ita turn, an “Orthodox Brotherhood” was banned from attending the event, out of organizers’ fear that they would disturb the peace.

As a result, the Hungarian Ambassador in Romania was called in for discussions.
