Pope Francis’ funeral to be held on Saturday

Pope Francis’ funeral will take place on Saturday, April 26, at 10:00 local time.

The Pope has been laid out in an open coffin, dressed in a red robe, wearing the papal mitre, and holding a rosary in his hand.

His Boyd is currently in the chapel of the Santa Maria chapel, at his residence in the Vatican.

He will be taken to St Peter’s Basilica on Wednesday morning, where his casket will remain until burial.

The public may pay its respects to see him.

The funeral mass will take place in St Peter’s Square.

As per Francis’ signature style, the funeral will be simpler than it was for previous popes.

Francis wants to rest in a simple wooden casket – whereas other popes were buried in elaborate nesting coffins of cypress, lead, and oak.

He has chosen not to be buried in the Vatican – breaking with tradition – and to be laid to rest instead of Rome’s basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, near a beloved icon of his.
