The Romanian Football Federation says Mirel Radoi has been named as coach to replace Cosmin Contra, who stepped down after the team failed to qualify for Euro 2020 via the group stage.
The 38-year-old former center back, who served as the U-21’s coach, will still have the chance to take the side to the finals of the June 12 to July 12 tournament through the playoffs.
Radoi’s first match will be a playoff away game too Iceland in March. The winner advances to play away to Bulgaria or Hungary for a place at Euro 2020.
Radoi who is well-respected in the Romania’s football community led Romania’s Under-21 team to the semifinals of its European Championship in June. That earned Romania a place in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics lineup.
In his playing career, Radoi was a defender for Steaua Bucharest before moving to Saudi Arabia.
Predecessor Contra was a teammate at Euro 2008. He left the job this month week after a 5-0 loss against Spain.
