Romania adds 1,111 new coronavirus cases, 51 deaths in past day

Romania has confirmed another 1,111 cases of the novel coronavirus in the past 24 hours, authorities said Tuesday.

The latest figures are almost 70% more than the previous day when the number of new infections fell due to lower rates of testing over the weekend.

The Strategic Communication Group said that just over 21,000 tests had been carried out in the past day, of which about 5.29% tested positive.

Some 51 Covid-19 patients died in the past day_ 28 men and 21 women _ one of the highest daily figures ever. All but two of the fatalities had underlying health conditions such as cancer, diabetes or heart disease.

Bucharest added 214 new cases of coronavirus, more than any other place in the country. There were 53 new infections in the neighboring county of Ilfov and the same number of the northern county of Suceava, which was the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak in April.

One coronavirus patient who died was in their 30s, another was in their 40s, six were in their 50s, 15 in their 60s and there were 28 patients over 70 who succumbed to the virus.

There are 460 patients with Covid-19 being treated in intensive care units and a total of 6,881 SARS-CoV-2 patients in hospital.

Romania has registered a total of 105,300 cases so far and 4,236 deaths.
