Romania confirms more than 15,500 cases of coronavirus and death toll rises to 972

Romania has confirmed 15,558 cases of coronavirus since the outbreak, and 972 people have died after catching the virus.

The Strategic Communication Group said Monday that 226 new cases were reported in the last 24 hours.

Some 255 patients are currently being treated for their symptoms in intensive care.

Some 7,245 patients have recovered from the virus since the outbreak started in March.

More than 262,000 tests have been conducted since the virus outbreak. Authorities increased testing in recent weeks.

The northern county of Suceava has 3,272 cases the highest number in Romania, with 5 cases pe 1,000 residents. There have been  167 COVID-19 deaths in the county, more than twice than in Arad, the next most affected county which has seen 74 deaths.

 An outbreak at a hospital in Suceava led to rapid transmission at the facility and among the population. The city and surrounding area is currently under a strict lockdown to prevent further spread of the virus.

There are currently 14,745 patients in institutionalized quarantine and about 19,000 in self-isolation at home, under medical supervision

Some 2,758 Romanians have been diagnosed with the virus abroad, and 100 have died. There are between 3 and 5 million Romanians living abroad.
