Romania faces new Covid-19 surge, posts pandemic high of 34,000 cases. Deaths on the rise

The number of Covid infections has surged to a new level in Romania as it logged more than 34,000 coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours.

It was a massive 74% higher than the previous record which was set the day before. Cases have skyrocketed in recent weeks with the more contagious omicron variant fueling the fifth wave.

Deaths also rose to 94, more than double Tuesday’s figure. It was the highest number of single-day deaths since December 7.

Intensive care units also began filling up with almost 700 patients needing treatment, 42 more than the previous day, authorities said.

Bucharest registered almost 5,000 new Covid-19 cases on Wednesday. The incidence rate in the capital rose to 11.71 per 1,000 residents, up from 11.03 on Tuesday.

The rate is measured over a rolling 14-day period.

The Strategic Communication Group said overall, there were 34,255 new cases in Romania in the past day.
