A study has shown that Romania is in position 29 of 37 countries in its Median Income adjusted for Purchasing power, standing at 11,087.
Hungary meanwhile is at 10,969.
In response, Viktor Orbán posted a status on Facebook, translated as follows: “If you think Romania has overtaken us, just move there and when you return back we’ll discuss what you have experienced”.
The statement has been met with irony given Orbán’s yearly presence in Romania.
What’s more, Politico points out that Orbán himself once criticized former arch-rival Ferenc Gyurcsány for similar remarks.
That Romania is doing better than Hungary is a first, given Romania’s long-time status as the European country which Tony Judt famously called “the bottom of the heap”.
In 2023 still, among the EU Member States, the lowest price level for the consumer goods and services included in household final consumption was recorded in Bulgaria and Romania.
Bulgaria and Greece have improved as well, standing at 11,158 and 11,400 respectively.
