Romania offers discounts on ‘Snow Trains’ to the Carpathians to boost winter tourism

Romania is putting on special ‘Snow Trains’ to the Carpathian mountains in a bid to encourage winter tourism.

The Romanian Railways (CFR) said they were offering  a 25%  discount on the InterRegio trains to mountain and ski resorts from January 10 to February 28, Agerpres news agency reported. InterRegio are faster than normal passenger trains and only stop in main stations.

„The Snow Trains are a green, rapid alternative to the usual traffic jams on the Prahova Valley as CFR InterRegio trains get their quickly,” a statement said.

The reductions will be available from Monday to Thursday for second-class tickets. Tickets can be bought for Sinaia, Buşteni, Azuga, Predeal and Braşov along the Prahova Valley.

Passengers can reach the resorts in less than 2 ½ hours  including  from Bucharest to  Brasov. It can taker up to six hours by road, depending on traffic.

Other trains that are part of the same deal go to Vatra Dornei and Vatra Dornei Băi in northern Romania.

A ticket from Bucharest to Predeal is about 31 lei (6.2 euros) under the scheme, about six euros. A ticket from Bucharest to Vatra Dornei costs 76 lei (15.2 euros) CFR Passenger Service said.

Tickets can be bought online from cfrcalatori.ro or via the mobile application „CFR Călători mersul trenurilor şi bilete online”. They can be purchased directly from stations or CFR and other agencies.
