Romania has reported 555 new Covid-19 cases in the past day, the highest figure in a single day since the pandemic began, authorities said Wednesday.

Testing levels were also high with 13,147 tests conducted nationwide in the past 24 hours. Some 4.22% of those tested were diagnosed with Covid-19.

The Strategic Communication Group said Wednesday that there have been 30,175 cases since the pandemic began.

Eighteen patients with the virus succumbed to the virus in the past day. Some 1,817 people have died after contracting the virus in Romania.

Most new cases were in the southern county of Dambovita which had 59 new cases in the last 24 hours and in the counties of Brasov and Arges, home to popular tourist spots. They recorded 53 new infections each in the past day, as did the capital, Bucharest.

Romania has seen a spike in cases since it began loosening lockdown restrictions in mid-June. It has made masks mandatory in enclosed public spaces and large gatherings are banned, but compliance is patchy.

Last week, the Constitutional Court published a ruling saying that the government doesn’t have the authority to enforce quarantine.

Since then hundreds of patients have voluntarily discharged from hospital and thousands have walked out of quarantine facilities or home quarantine.

The minority Liberal government is trying to get Parliament to pass a law so it can enforce quarantine.
