Romania reports almost 1,300 new coronavirus infections

Romania reported 1,298 new cases of Covid-19 on Wednesday, the highest figure for a single day since Aug. 29.

The figure takes the total number of coronavirus infections to almost 90,000.

The Strategic Communication Group said that 26,816 people had been tested for SARS-CoV-2 in the past day, of which 4.84% were confirmed to have the virus, a similar figure to Tuesday’s.

Some 40 people with the virus died in the last day. There are currently 519 patients with the disease in intensive care units, one of the highest numbers ever.

There were 27 men and 13 women with the virus who died. They all had preexisting health conditions such as cancer, diabetes or heart disease. The youngest fatality was a patient in their 40s.

Bucharest saw the most new cases, with 97 confirmed infections, lower than figures for last week, however. The central county of Brasov, a tourist hotspot reported 60 new cases and the northeast county of Iasi recorded 61 fresh cases.

There are about 10,000 people with the virus isolating at home and 5,800 patients in institutionalized isolation.

Some 38,700 patients have recovered from the virus and 11,400 of asymptomatic patients have been discharged from hospital ten days after they tested positive for the virus.
