Romania reports more than 1,600 new Covid-19 cases, 42 deaths

Romania has added another 1,629 cases of coronavirus and 42 deaths in the past 24 hours as the country prepares to go to the polls.

The Strategic Communication Group said the number of patients in intensive care units rose to 508, the highest figure since Sept. 2. The number of Covid-19 patients in intensive care units has risen in the past week. There are a total of 7,245Covid-19 patients in hospital.

About 25,500 tests were carried out in the last day, and 6.39% of those were positive

The latest figures for the virus came two days before Romanians vote in municipal elections that were originally slated for June but postponed for three months due to the pandemic.

The cumulative total of cases stands at 119,683, while more than 96,158 patients have recovered from the virus.

A total of 25 men and 17 women succumbed to the effects of the virus in the past day. Three fatalities were patients in their 40s, five were in their 50s, 10 in the 60s and the rest were over 70.

All the patients, bar one had underlying health issues such as obesity, heart diseases or diabetes.

Bucharest, as usual had more cases than anywhere else with 210 new infections, while cases shot up in the eastern county of Bacau which registered 102 new cases.

The Prahova valley tourist region reported 87 new cases after a drop in infections of late.

The Black Sea region of Constanta, which has largely been spared by the pandemic reported 66 new cases, the day after a record 82 cases were recorded. The tourist season has for the most part ended on the coast.

The number of Covid-19 patients in self-isolation rose to 9,352 while there were another 7,000 in institutionalized isolation. These cases are not severe enough to need hospital treatmene.t
