Video shows US soldiers arriving in Romania in 2022, not Israel in 2023 in fake news alert.

A video showing U.S. soldiers land in Romania in June 2022 has been falsely shared online as showing U.S. Marines arriving in Israel during the Israel-Hamas war in October 2023.

“HAPPENING NOW: Thousands of U.S. Marines have just landed in Israel WW3 HIGH ALERT” read posts sharing the dated video on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. Screenshots from the video were also shared on Facebook and TikTok as showing a scene from Israel, Reuters and the Associated Press news agencies reported.

The low-resolution video contains flipped excerpts from a longer video uploaded to a media-distribution service funded by the United States Department of Defense (DOD) that shows soldiers of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) arriving in Mihail Kogainiceanu, Romania in June 2022.

The altered clips being shared on social media begin at 0:46 minutes of the longer video.

An image from the same 2022 event can be viewed on the DoD’s website. According to the DOD’s caption, the soldiers arrived in Romania to “support the Army’s V Corps’ mission to reinforce NATO’s eastern flank and engage in multinational exercises with partners across Europe to reassure allies and deter further Russian aggression.”

There are no reports of U.S. Marines having arrived in Israel as of Oct. 27, 2023.

The United States has sent aircraft carriers to the Middle East in the weeks since an Oct. 7 attack by Hamas on Israel ignited the current conflict. About 900 more U.S. troops are headed to the Middle East to bolster air defenses for U.S. personnel amid a surge in attacks by Iran-affiliated groups following rising tensions over the Israel-Hamas war, Reuters reported, citing the Pentagon on Thursday.

Wrong caption. Video shows U.S. army soldiers arrive in Romania in June 2022, not U.S. marines in Israel in October 2023.
