The mayor of the Black sea town of Agigea has been charged with expropriating 9,000 square meters of land on the coast and then selling it to relatives and friends.

Two relatives illegally took ownership of the prime real estate where they built a high-end seafood restaurant, reports said.

Anti-corruption prosecutors on June 10 charged the mayor, Maricel Cristian Carjaliu,  of official misconduct, for taking possession of an asset he was not entitled to. The town hall secretary Ancuta Calust is charged with being an accomplice in the case.

There was no immediate comment from Carjaliu or Calust. Carjaliu is vice chairman of the Constanta branch of the Social Democratic Party.

Prosecutors said he took the land from a company, then transferred it to  the town hall and divided it up into seven lots. Companies controlled by his relatives and friends then took ownership of some of the land.

A statement said that Calust, as town hall secretary, helped him legalize the transaction by signing documents.

Prosecutors said he illegally confiscated the land, by canceling the seafood company’s authorization permit, and swooped in on the land, initially giving ownership to the town hall and then companies owned by people close to him.

Damages were estimated to be 3.6 million euros and 1.55 million lei, prosecutors said.

Constanta 100% reported that the mayor and the secretary misappropriated the  land around the Golful Pescarilor or Anglers’ Gulf and then sold some of the land to the mayor’s brother’s godson, without getting the required permit from the Agigea Local Council.

The new owner established the Golful Pescarilor restaurant in which the mayor’s son-in-law also had a share. The land was initially owned by Sarda Fish fishery.
