A Romanian lawmaker has submitted a draft law that would postpone general elections by more than three months.

The opposition Social Democratic Party, which lost seats across the country in municipal elections last weekend, supports the idea of parliamentary elections being pushed back.

The Liberal Party has set the parliamentary ballot for Dec. 6. Under the draft proposal submitted by an independent lawmaker, general elections would be held in March.

Lawmaker Adrian Dohotaru, formerly a member of the Save Romania Union, submitted the proposal on Friday. He has proposed elections are held on March 14.

Mr. Dohotaru is an independent  but has sided with the Social Democrats in several parliamentary votes, G4Media reported. He didn’t support a no confidence vote to oust the Social Democrats in October 2019. The government led by former Premier Viorica Dancila fell anyway.

He also voted against the current minority Liberal government that came to office after the Social Democrats were dismissed.

The Social Democrats who are the biggest party in parliament and their allies are likely support the initiative.

Social Democrat chairman Marcel Ciolos on Thursday suggested that elections should be pushed back as coronavirus cases could rise to 3,000 a day. Romania has seen more than 2,000 new cases in the past two days,
