President Nicuşor Dan on Thursday attended a Board of Peace meeting in Washington where President Donald Trump called him “the prime minister.”

Romania has observer status, and the the president said he decided to accept the invitation after speaking with American partners about the implications and considering Romania’s other international commitments.

In his opening speech, Trump referred to the Romanian head of state as the  “prime minister”, adding that the Romanian people are “fantastic”.

President Nicuşor Dan shook hands with Trump on Thursday and took pictures with several members of the Board, including the Argentinian President Javier Milei and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair.

During the event, Trump introduced Dan as prime minister instead of president. “Prime Minister Dan of Romania… Wonderful people. Romanians are fantastic, fantastic, just like you are fantastic. Many come and work in this country and help us. They are people you can rely on,” he said.

The American leader announced that Norway has agreed to host an event of the Board of Peace. “I am pleased to announce that Norway has agreed to host an event that will bring together the Board of Peace,” Trump said during his speech.

However, Norway has previously indicated that it will not immediately join the Peace Council. It is unclear whether their position has changed. Trump also criticized Norway for not awarding him the Nobel Peace Prize. The prize is awarded by a committee, not the Norwegian government.
