Romania’s president Klaus Iohannis met with his Kenyan counterpart William Ruto as part of a nine-day African tour, the first by a Romanian leader in 30 years.

Klaus Iohannis held talks with the Kenyan President and signed several bilateral documents, the Presidential Administration in Bucharest said.

Iohannis praised the bilateral 55 years relations and called Kenya is an example of political stability and democratic transition in East Africa.

The state visit to Kenya is the first stage of his Africa tour that also includes state visits to Tanzania and the Republic of Cabo Verde, as well as an official visit to Senegal.

President Iohannis’s visits to Africa aim to revive relations with the continent after Romania adopted the strategy ‘Romania – Africa: Partnership for the future through peace, development, and education, a framework document of vision.’

The Romanian president is in charge of the country’s foreign policy. This year, Mr. Iohannis also toured South America, also the first visit by a head of state in decades. He leaves office in 2024 after two terms.

There has been criticism about the cost and the lack of transparency about the expense of these long-haul tours where the president has used private jets.
