Thousands of Romanians are expected to protest the latest developments in a political crisis that has left the country without a fully functioning government since early May.
Several Facebook pages announced a protest in Victory Square, outside the government offices on Friday evening.
Headlined “We need to defend democracy!”, the rally is organized by Facebook pages Resista, MEA Association and Initiative Romania.
The action came after three court cases on Thursday that were apparently linked to the crisis and designed to strengthen the hand of President Nicusor Dan who has failed to nominate a prime minister who can muster the votes needed in Parliament.
Background
The coalition led by center-right Ilie Bolojan was ousted following a no-confidence vote in the Romanian Parliament on May, leaving the administration in a caretaker capacity.
After Dan’s first pick failed to secure votes, he designated Liberal Adrian Veștea as prime minister to form a pro-Western cabinet, but his nomination has caused deep divisions. Bolojan has threatened to expel Veștea and any Liberal lawmakers who vote to confirm his new government
Protest
Other groups who rallied people triggered by the Recorder documentary “Justice, Captured”, “Corruption Kills” and “Declic”, who were blacklisted by the top magistrates organization discredit the justice system are expected to be there.
“Romania is under siege: When the whole system fights hard not to change anything, it is time to take to the streets again,” organizers said.
“When justice helps some and is a plague for others, the voices of citizens demand justice. When the institutions act only on orders, it is a patriotic duty to protest against a captured state,” they added.
