Despite the cold, gray weather over much of the country, Romanians on Friday celebrated International Women’s Day with flowers and a smile.

The day is so popular in Romania that some people even celebrate their female pets and feed them special treats.

March 8 is the end of a week of celebration that started last Friday with the beginning Spring when Romanians give trinkets tied with red and white thread to celebrate the beginning of Spring.

Romanians give and receive flowers during the week, with impromptu flower sellers popping up everywhere. Mauve, white and pink hyacinths and tulips are the favorite floral choice to gift.

Women attended special events on Friday, many of them dressing in their finest for the occasion. Companies organized lunches for female employees while others gave employees the afternoon off.

Restaurants are expected to be full this evening, with men picking up the tab.

Two days left to see the „Brides of the Sun” exhibition
