Romania’s government on Wednesday formally ratified the NATO accession agreement for Sweden and Finland.
Speaking ahead of a government meeting, Prime Minister Nicolae Ciucă declared that in doing so, Romania became one of the first countries to complete the national ratification stage.
The two Nordic countries embarked on a drastic foreign policy shift after Russia invaded Ukraine in February, breaking with decades of neutrality and expressing their intention to join the military alliance.
Both Helsinki and Stockholm formally applied to join the Western military alliance on May 18.
Turkey agreed to lift its initial veto against their accession during the NATO summit in Madrid last month, opening the path for the two countries to be formally invited to join the alliance.
The ambassadors of member states signed the Accession Protocols in Brussels on July 5. All 30 NATO member states are expected to ratify the protocols through their national procedures.
Canada, Germany and Poland have also completed the national ratification stage.
Romania joined NATO in 2004.
