Romania canceled its November 2024 presidential elections after reports of Russian interference in the campaign favoring radical EU skeptic Calin Georgescu who defied predictions and improbably won the first round.

The 55 year-old mathematician’s approach to his campaign contrasts to Calin Georgescu who claimed he spent nothing on his bid.
Dan said he was ‘optimistic’ he would raise the money for his campaign and called on authorities to be transparent about the reasons they canceled the elections.
Romania’s nationalist opposition has organized protests drawing thousands over the canceled elections. Both supporters and opponents of Georgescu have called for the election interference to be investigated.
