A heated debate has generated around the subject of the Olympic rings remaining permanently on the Eiffel Tower.

The five rings were installed on the Eiffel Tower before the Paris Olympics opened on 26 July, and were expected to be taken down after the Paralympics’ closing ceremony on 8 September.

But mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, stated that she wanted to keep them there.

“The decision is mine, and I have the agreement of the IOC [International Olympic Committee],” she told the Ouest-France newspaper over the weekend.

More specifically, if all goes according to the mayor’s plans, the very heavy rings will be replaced by a lighter, permanent replica.

A petition was launched three days ago against keeping the rings. 30,000 people have signed it so far.
