In October of last year, Norway said it would support Romania with 127m$ for the acquisition of an advanced Patriot surface-to-air missile system, after Romania donated its own to Ukraine.
In the meantime, the US Pentagon signed a 946m$ contract with aerospace and defense company Raytheon Technologies for a Patriot missile systems to Romania, reports Romania Insider.
The contract includes advanced radars, control stations, and interceptor missiles.
Romania last ordered seven Patriot air defense system for 3.9b$. Four have been delivered, and one has already been donated to Ukraine. But the Romanian Air Force has been pushed into needing to replace what it’s donated given the ongoing military crisis next door.
The next three systems will come into Romania from 2027 on.
“I thank every country that truly helps us with air defense. I especially thank Romania for the Patriot (…) And we can achieve even greater effectiveness—we can completely end Russian terror by downing Shahed drones and missiles in cooperation”, said President Zelensky.
