On the 25th of March, the Feast of the Annunciation is celebrated by Orthodox Christians and Catholics alike.

This represents the moment in which the Virgin Mary was visited (most likely in Nazareth) by the Archangel Gabriel with the news that she would bear the child of God.

In Romanian popular tradition, it also known as the Cuckoo’s Day. The cuckoo sings from the Spring Equinox to the Summer Solstice.

It is also said that you should leave bread and salt on your doorstep for the angels to feast on.

Furthermore, we should wear clean clothes, eat well and be happy on this day.

In the region of Maramures particularly, fires are built for the „Night of Fires”.
