Train disruptions in Italy coincide with Winter Olympic Games

Several incidents affecting railway infrastructure in northern Italy caused significant travel disruption this week.

This coincidences with large numbers of visitors arrived for the opening of the Winter Olympic Games.

Police and transport authorities said they were investigating three separate incidents involving damage to rail lines.

One involved a fire affecting rail infrastructure between Bologna and Venice, leading to delays of up to two and a half hours.

In other locations nearby, officers later reported finding severed electrical cables and a rudimentary explosive device placed close to a track.

A separate incident was reported near Pesaro on the Adriatic coast, where a track switch was damaged by fire.

No injuries were reported in any of the incidents.

Nor has any group or individual claimed responsibility.

Bologna’s main railway station was temporarily affected. It is a key transport hub connecting north–south and east–west routes.

Rail services were gradually returning to normal by Saturday afternoon.

Italy’s Ministry of Transport described the incidents as sabotage and said they were under investigation.

Police said inquiries were ongoing and that they had not yet determined who was responsible or whether the incidents were coordinated.

The opening ceremony of the Winter Olympic Games took place on Friday evening in Milan, Cortina d’Ampezzo, and other locations across northern Italy, many of which are connected by rail.

Events are being held across a wide area, including venues in the Alps and the Dolomites.

Authorities said security measures around transport infrastructure had been increased while investigations continue.

While the timing of the incidents has understandably raised concerns, it is still too early to determine the intent behind them. Similar disruptions to rail infrastructure have occurred in the past without geopolitical significance, and no responsibility has yet been claimed — or made public.

As investigations continue, additional information will be needed to assess whether these events represent a coordinated act or isolated incidents. Nevertheless, the resemblance to the great railway “failure” on the day of the Paris opening in 2024 is salient.
