U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken supports Moldova in efforts to resist ‘foreign influence’

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken offered his support to Moldova in its efforts to protect its sovereignty, territorial integrity and resist foreign influence as it celebrated 33 years of independence,

During a visit to the former Soviet republic in May, the Secretary of State  pledged $135 million in aid to Moldova for energy security and to counter Russian disinformation.

Meeting President Maia Sandu,  Mr. Blinken reaffirmed Washington’s support for Moldova’s European integration and its sovereignty against the backdrop of Russian threats and the war in Ukraine.

He also expressed his admiration for Ms. Sandu’s leadership and praised recent progress made by Chisinau, including the fight against corruption and preparations for European Union accession.

In a message on Tuesday to mark the 33rd anniversary since it broke away from the Soviet Union, he recalled his visit:

“During my visit to Moldova in May, I was deeply impressed by your steadfast commitment to democracy, economic development, energy security, human rights, and justice sector reforms. The United States stands with the people of Moldova in your efforts to protect your sovereignty and territorial integrity and to resist foreign influence from actors seeking to interfere with Moldova’s elections and path towards European integration. We are grateful for Moldova’s unwavering support to Ukraine and generosity in hosting Ukrainian refugees. We remain committed to partnering with Moldova in its pursuit of a future that is more democratic, prosperous, and secure.”

“I extend my best wishes to the Moldovan people as they celebrate this joyous day.”

Moldova, which lies between Ukraine and European Union member state Romania, plans to hold a referendum on joining the 27-member bloc on Oct. 20, on the same day it holds  a presidential election where Sandu is favored to win a second term.

The former World Bank Economist wast elected in 2020 on a pro-European ticket and has worked to eradicate endemic corruption and develop a Western-style democracy. She has repeatedly accused Russian of trying to destabilize the country of 3 million with disinformation campaigns.
