‘Hundreds’ of Russian drones and missiles hit Ukraine overnight, Ukraine’s foreign minister said.

Russia targeted the Ukrainian capital Kyiv in a “massive attack”, its Mayor Vitali Klitschko said Sunday. Other cities were also hit.

In neighboring Poland, jets were scrambled early on Sunday as Russia hit western Ukraine and the country partially closed its airspace, the Polish armed forces said.

The Polish military further described the actions – which have become routine since Polish and Nato aircraft shot down three Russian drones which violated its Poland’s airspace on 10 September, as a preventative measure.

A five-storied building was partially destroyed, he said and at least three suffered injuries and were taken to hospital. Nine were injured overall with details still emerging.

Ukraine’s foreign minister Andrii Sybiha said hundreds of drones and missiles had been used in the latest attacks.  “We must maximize the cost of further escalation for Russia,” he said. There was no immediate comment from Russia.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky on Saturday warned that Russia would not stop with Ukraine and was testing European air defenses with the recent incursions in several NATO countries, including Poland, Estonia and Romania.

Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 and has ignored international efforts, including a push by US President Donald Trump, to end the war.

“Putin will not wait to finish his war in Ukraine. He will open up some other direction. Nobody knows where,” Zelensky said on Saturday, ahead of the latest Russian assault on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities.

The strikes in Kyiv damaged residential buildings and caused civilian casualties, with at least nine people wounded, officials said.
