UNESCO sites now include Romania’s most beautiful villages

More and more, Romanian villages have come to be seen as off-the-grid hidden gems for tourists interested in experienced in an unpolluted, traditional way of life. Villages which have been deemed most beautiful include:

  • Biertan
    • 30 km from the city of Sighisoara, in Sibiu County, this small and picturesque village boasts a marvellous fortified church. Tourists can bike or roam the village, with traditional Saxon houses, and the surrounding hills, which bear the traces of a viticultural heritage.
  • Rîmetea
    • Clean and bright, this village in Alba County is known for its homogeneously painted white houses. The view doesn’t hurt either, what with the panorama offered by Piatra Secului and other mountains in the proximity.
  • Criț
    • Located în Brașov County, this Saxon village may be small, but is in proximity to a series of exciting attractions, including the Haferland Festival and Casa Kraus. It has a beautiful fortified church and traditional Saxon houses.
  • Viscri
    • Another traditional Saxon village in the Brașov area, Viscri has attracted the attention of King Charles III, who has spent a great many pleasant vacation days there, going so far as to buy his own house in the village.

Boasting a varied array of mountains and a Black Sea Coast, striking natural phenomena involving undulating hills and glacial lakes, not to mention medieval cities and monasteries, Romania has been under the spotlight increasingly in recent years, making appearances in, films, documentaries, and shows. Other locations in Romania that have made the UNESCo World Heritage List include:

  • The Danube Delta
  • Moldavian monasteries (Voroneț, Sucevița)
  • Sighișoara’s historic town center
  • Maramureș’s wooden church (Bârsana, Rogoz)
  • Dacian fortresses in the Orăștie Mountains (Costești, Luncani)
  • The mining landscape at Roșia Montană
