Romania’s military have carried out a controlled explosion of a naval mine that had drifted close to the country’s Black Sea shore, the defense ministry said.

The mine was defused Sunday evening by a team of five Navy divers, according to Cornel Pavel, spokesman for the Romanian Navy.

It was floating less than 4 kilometers from the Eforie Nord, a popular tourist resort.

Mines began floating in the Black Sea after Russia invaded Ukraine on Feb. 24.

Romanian, Bulgarian and Turkish military diving teams have been defusing those drifting in their waters.

The Black Sea is crucial waterway for the shipment of grain, oil and oil products.

Bulgaria, Romania, Georgia and Turkey, as well as Ukraine and Russia border the Black Sea.

The mine defused on Sunday was the second handled by the Romanian military since March.
