VIDEO | Romania’s Madrigal Choir returns to the US for first time since communism ended

Romania’s famed Madrigal Choir will return to the United States for the first time since communism ended for a grand anniversary tour in four cities. Tickets have already sold out.

Six concerts will be held from Nov. 24 to Dec. 4 in a number of historical and cultural venues such as the US Congress building, the National Cathedral in Washington, the Saint John the Divine Cathedral and the Merkin Hall concert hall in New York, the Town Hall in Seattle, and the Saint James Lutheran Church in Chicago.

Concerts will be held in Washington, New York, Chicago and Seattle, the embassy said in a press release sent to Universul.net.

The much-awaited comeback of one of the world’s great choral ensembles will showcase the Madrigal’s artistic prowess, choral dexterity and spectacular stage presence.

The recitals which include a special one on Romania’s Dec.1 national day, will offer a carefully curated program, featuring Renaissance music, Romanian and international carols, and timeless choral compositions.

The Madrigal came into being in 1963 thanks to music professor and conductor Constantin Marin and a group of students passionate about chamber music. It was during the Communist era when Romania was in deep isolation and the choir was considered a progressive choral music laboratory. Musicians experimented with folk music and performed a musical mix from Byzantine songs to contemporary Romanian music.
The carols they sang under communism when religion was frowned on entered the collective consciousness of Romanians as a symbol of freedom.

The concerts will be conducted by Anna Ungureanu, at the invitation of the Romanian Embassy in the U.S.

The Madrigal’s last concert to the U.S was in 1988, a year before the collapse of communism when leader Nicolae Ceausescu and his wife Elena were executed. Former President Jimmy Carter attended one of the concerts then.

This time, the Madrigal Choir will meet with the American public and also with Romanians in the U.S.

The Madrigal Choir is one of Romania’s best cultural exports, a national brand and an arm of public diplomacy.

The tour is also an excellent opportunity to celebrate Romanian talent,  Romania’s Ambassador to Washington, Andrei Muraru said.

One of the concerts will be performed in the world’s largest episcopal cathedral, which is an architectural jewel.

Saint John the Divine Cathedral in New York covers 11,200 square meters and is one of the five largest church buildings in the world. Its construction began in 1892.

The tour is organized by Romania’s Embassy  in the U.S and the Romanian Cultural Institute in New York. It is supported by of the Ministry of Culture and sponsors Banca Transilvania, Vodafone, ING, UiPath and Fan Courier.

Details about the event, calendar, venues and public access are available on the tournament website – www.madrigaltour.com.
