One of the crewmen who was injured after a drone struck a Liberian-flagged oil tanker in the Black Sea has died from his injuries, Romanian authorities said.
The 45-year-old man died Thursday at the Tulcea County Hospital, while two others injured in the blast are being treated in intensive care.
He sustained injuries after the strike late Monday which Romanian President Nicusor Dan said was “likely part of Russia’s illegal war against Ukraine.”
The deceased who was from the Philippines, suffered burns to his airway passages and a lung complication, according to Tulcea County Hospital director, Tudor-Ion Nastasescu.
“He had an airway burn and had a pulmonary complication related to this burn that caused his death,” he said.
The other two injured sailors, also Filippino, are stable and don’t need to be transferred.
Gas Lisbon, an LPG-type oil tanker, was about 20 nautical miles southeast of the Roamnian Danube port of Sfântu Gheorghe when it was struck on Tuesday, suffering major damage after a fire broke out.
The Free Seafarers’ Union said the tanker was actually hit by two missiles.
It left from the port of Alexandria, Egypt and was heading to Reni in Ukraine. It had a d a cargo of more than 3,790 tons of propane and 17 crew members who were all safely evacuated. Three injured sailors were taken to the Tulcea County Hospital.
