VIDEO | Thermal waterfall freezes in Romania in rare winter sight

A Transylvanian thermal waterfall has frozen over for first time in recent years after a cold snap.

The Toplița (pronounced Topleetsa) waterfall is in Romania’s Transylvania region is 10 meters high and a renowned beauty spot.

It recently froze over, creating a spectacular display of icy swords.

Tourists took photos of the winter wonder featuring a mixture of ice sheets and steaming water.

This video, taken by Apollo Apy on January 27, shows the Toplita waterfall turned to ice. The video was picked up by BBC and Euronews on Friday.

The transformation is rare as the waterfall sits below a hot spring which churns out warm water even in winter.

But recent sub-zero temperatures during the night led to it freezing. The curtain of water turned into an intricate ice embroidery.

Toplița lies in a protected area of national interest.

The water reaches a temperature of 27 degrees.

The last known freeze was in the winter of 2014 when the region recorded minus 29 Celsius and the waterfall froze,  tourist site Visit Harghita wrote.
