Pope Francis cared for his fellow human beings and comforted the suffering, Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu said at the funeral of the late pontiff.

“I was filled with emotion and gratitude, at the funeral of Pope Francis today at the Vatican. We said goodbye to a pastor and a leader, who with warmth, compassion and understanding always cared for his fellow human beings and comforted the suffering.

“Pope Francis always had a good thought for the Romanian people. His  visit in 2019 will always remain in our memory,” Ciolacu wrote on Facebook. Romania was also represented by interim President Ilie Bolojan.

Romania, a predominantly Orthodox country, held a day of national mourning on Saturday in memory of Pope Francis.

The pontiff died on Monday at the age of 88 and was buried on Saturday in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in central Rome.
