More than 6,000 people were evacuated from their homes in eastern Romania after heavy flooding in the area left people scrambling to safety.
The area is already reeling from floods earlier this month which left at least five dead after torrential rainstorms pummeled the area, leaving hundreds stranded.
The storms came after an unseasonably hot spell, with temperatures soaring over 30C in southern Romania. The cold front hit the country Sunday and the weather cooled abruptly with rainstorms flooding eastern Romania.Authorities on Monday were clearing the Transalpina road in the mountains after heavy snowfall.
Most of the people affected by the flooding were from the Galati area, which was hit by rainstorms, the authority for emergency situations IGSU announced Monday morning.
It said it had carried out rescues in 116 places in 29 counties across Romania after heavy rains and high winds.
Falling trees damaged 14 vehicles and two buildings, while authorities rescued 11 people who got stuck in the central county of Covasna.
Bad weather suspended maritime and river traffic in all ports in Constanta County and at Bara Sulina, in Tulcea County, News.ro reported.
Authorities said a total of 5,937 people were evacuated from Galati county and rehoused. Elsewhere, 684 people refused to be moved.
Military firefighters rescued 11 people,– eight adults and three children, who were stuck with their cars on a forest road.
Maritime and river traffic was suspended in eastern Romania due to strong winds.
IGSU representatives have advised the public to avoid swollen rivers and streams.
“In case of strong winds, avoid driving near trees, poles, billboards or buildings that have loose mortar. Drivers are advised to avoid travel in areas affected by floods or under weather warnings. Motorists are advised to check weather conditions before when they leave,“ IGSU said.
