The chairman of the AUR populist party George Simion on Tuesday met with the US ambassador to Bucharest, Darryl Nirenberg in the middle of a political deadlock now approaching its third month, the party said.
Romania is currently in an almost three-month political deadlock without a fully functioning government but AUR said that regardless of how the current political crisis ends, the bi-lateral relationship will remain strong, News.ro reported.
AUR is pushing for early elections but Romania’s centrist President Nicusor Dan wants to avoid that scenario and find a pro-Western government that can win a parliamentary majority.
Romania has never held snap elections. The next parliamentary elections are scheduled for 2028.
Romania and the United States signed up to a strategic partnership in 1997, focusing on defense cooperation, energy security, and economic growth.
It commits to strong NATO ties and regional stability in the Black Sea region.
Romania hosts military Infrastructure including the Aegis Ashore missile defense facility at Deveselu in southeast Romania.
Simion, whose party is ahead in the polls said: “A very good meeting today between the president of AUR, George Simion, and the ambassador of the United States of America to Romania, Darryl Nirenberg,”
In March 2026, when Parliament debated the US request for the deployment of US equipment and troops in Romania, Simion told Ambassador Nirenberg:
“As ambassador, be an ally of the Romanians, not a master. And I assure you and all your American counterparts that you will have the respect and love of the Romanian people, as long as you do not do things against the will of the Romanian people.”
