An 18-year-old boy who had cancer has become the youngest person diagnosed with Covid-19 to succumb to the virus, authorities said Monday

The unnamed patient, who was suffering from a brain tumor, was one of 37 patients with coronavirus to die in the past 24 hours. Previously, the youngest fatality was a 21-year-old woman who died in April.

All the people who died in the past 24 hours had underlying health conditions such as cancer, diabetes and heart disease.

The death toll from the virus now stands at 3,309 and the cumulative number of Covid-19 cases is 79,330.

The Strategic Communication Group reported 825 new cases of SARS-CoV-2 in the past 24 hours after only 6,500 tests were carried out.

Some 12.71% of people tested were confirmed to have the virus, the highest rate since July 27. Fewer tests are conducted over the weekend. Five counties didn’t report any new cases, likely due to reduced testing.

There were 140 new infections in Bucharest including at the Floreasca Emergency Hospital.

Hospital spokesman Bogdan Oprita told Agerpres national news agency that 15 healthcare professionals including a junior doctor, a stretcher-bearer, and nurses and medical assistants had the novel coronavirus.

One section was closed for emergency surgery, due to the infections, he said.

Prahova county, an area popular with tourists, which has seen a high number of cases for weeks reported 63 new cases. A 50-year-old nurse from Prahova died after contacting Covid-19 on Sunday.

There are currently 10,.742 with the virus who are self-isolating at home and 5,433 who are in institutionalized isolation.

Authorities say that 35,517 Covid-19 patients have recovered from the virus since it reached Romania in late February.
