A Bulgarian man declared brain dead has saved the lives of three Romanians, the National Transplant Agency said Friday.

It said the family of the man agreed to donate his organs and a hospital in Bulgaria removed his kidneys and liver, News.ro reported.
”At the beginning of a new year, the altruism, humanity, professionalism and responsibility of over the border brought back to life three suffering Romanians,” a statement said.
“Thanks to the collaboration between the National Transplant Agency and the Executive Agency for Medical Supervision in Bulgaria, the humane gesture of the family of a donator who was brain dead in a hospital… together with the efforts of the medical teams of both countries, life was handed like a relay baton from a Bulgarian to three Romanians,” the National Transplant Agency said.
Surgeons
It said a team of surgeons from the Fundeni Clinic including Dr. Guenadiy Vatachki, Dr. Darina Barzan, Dr. Ioana Danciuc şi Dr. Oana Evelina Pasăre traveled to the University Hospital in, Panagyurishte, to harvest the liver and kidneys of a Bulgarian patient who was brain dead. His family had agreed to donate his organs.
Panagyurishte, south of the Bulgarian capital, Sofia and about 400 kilometers southwest of Bucharest.
”With the support of the Panagyurishte University Hospital medical team and good collaboration with the Bulgarian Agency of Medical Supervision Bulgaria, we successfully harvested (organs) and a new life-saving mission was successfully carried out by the Fundeni Institute and the Dr. C.I. Parhon in Iaşi to save three Romanian lives,’” the statement said.
Liver transplant
A critically ill patient received a liver transplant carried out by the Fundeni Liver Transplant Center, the statement said.
Two other patients got a long-awaited kidney transplant which was carried out by the Renal Transplant Center of the Fundeni Clinic and the Dr. C.I. Parhon Clinic in Iaşi.
