Cambridge University to offer students Romanian as a degree

The Romanian language is spreading its wings.
Starting this academic year, it will be studied to degree level at the University of Cambridge, one of Britain’s elite higher seats of learning.
Romania’s Education Ministry, the Institute of the Romanian Language have already announced they are looking for candidates for four Romanian language lecturer positions at Cambridge University and three other higher education institutions.
Leading Romanian linguist and university professor, Dr. Alexandru Nicolae, said the development would “raise cultural awareness” of the Romanian language, one of the five major Romance or Latin-based  languages.
The others are French, Spanish, Portuguese and Italian.
The four universities where Romanian will be offered are:
  1. University of Cambridge, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland;
  2. Mohammed V University of Rabat, the Kingdom of Morocco;
  3. “St. K. Ohridski” University, Sofia, Republic of Bulgaria;
  4. Comrat State University, Republic of Moldova.

“Candidates must be teachers, tenured in an accredited or authorized Romanian educational institution/unit, with a seniority of at least 2 years,” the job ad reads.

The position involves promoting of the Romanian language, literature, culture and civilization by:

  1. teaching activities (course, seminar, laboratory, consultations, exams, development of teaching materials, translations, etc.)
  2. scientific research (participation/organization of scientific events, guidance and coordination of students, etc.)
  3. organizing and participating in other professional and cultural activities in the academic community

Students can already study Romanian at Oxford University and University College of London.
