Cyprus ambassador to Romania found dead at residence

Romanian police say that Cyprus ambassador to Romania has been found dead at the embassy residence in the Romanian capital.

Police said Monday that the body of Filippos Kritios, 62, had been transported to the morgue for an autopsy.

He is believed to have died early Sunday. One hypothesis is that he suffered a heart attack.

„With sadness and profound emotion, we say farewell to our distinguished colleague the ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus to Bucharest, Filippos Kritiotis, who died suddenly on Sunday morning,” Romania’s foreign ministry said.

Kritiotis, who had 27 years experience in the diplomatic service, was appointed ambassador to Bucharest in July 2019.

During his career, he was a High Commissioner of Cyprus in Australia.

He was head of the Cypriot foreign ministry’s European Union Department from 2008 to 2009, and head of the America Department from 2009 to 2010.

He was married and had a daughter.
