The first direct flight from Romania to the US from Romania in over 20 years has landed in New York.

The flight operated by Moldova’s HiSky takes ten hours and the aircraft has two aisles, 275 seats and will fly four times a week, the Romanian embassy in Washington said.

For the inaugural flight on Friday, the plane took off from Henri Coanda Airport on Friday was piloted by HiSky’s CEO, Iulian Scorpan, who has more than 20 years of experience. It landed at John F. Kennedy Airport shortly before noon.

Romania’s Ambassador to the United States, Andrei Muraru, and Simona Florea, the Consul General of Romania in New York, welcomed the passengers and crew.

Passengers arriving in the States were greeted by the airport authorities as well as the diplomats after the aircraft was given the aviation ritual of being sprayed with water.

„I am particularly happy to be present today, at the landing, on American soil, of the first direct flight between Romania and the USA, operated by a Romanian company, after a break of almost 21 years,” Ambassador Muraru said.

„The resumption of non-stop flights is a significant step for bringing Romanians and Americans closer together, while contributing to boosting tourism, attracting American investments and…. increasing bilateral trade,”he added.

The flights are operated from Romania on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays,  the airline said.

The aircraft, an Airbus A330-200, is the first wide-body plane in the company’s fleet and the only one of its kind registered in Romania.

Prices start at 349 euros for economy class 1,899 euros for business class. A catering service is included in the ticket price and passengers have access to multimedia content available on the aircraft’s entertainment system.

The airline announced the route last year,  after receiving authorization from the US Department of Transportation to operate regular flights to New York.

HiSky operates flights to Brussels, Barcelona, Malaga, Dublin, Chișinău, Bordeaux, Tel Aviv, and Frankfurt.
